One of Australia’s foremost DJs, Alex Taylor has rocked practically every dancefloor in Sydney, not to mention major interstate forays and global guest spots including London, Los Angeles, Bangkok, Ibiza and Shanghai, and exclusive celebrity events with the likes of Grace Jones, U2 and Madonna. And very occasionally, when the time is right, he steps up to the promotions game, bringing his passion, charm and experience to the table to create a truly unique experience.

This June Long Weekend is one such time, as Alex joins up with inthedark for a very special event at Sydney’s leading night club, Marquee. We caught up with Alex to find out a little more about what to expect.

Why now? What’s happened to make you want to get back into the promotions game?

It’s all about timing isn’t it? I’ve been a full time DJ for over 15 years and in the time I’ve done a LOT of parties, in Australia and around the world – in places lIke Ibiza, London, Shanghai, LA… you know the cities where it’s really done right… so feel like I’ve pretty much been a student of ‘the party’ or nightclubs in general and now I’ve graduated to a point where I want to bring some of that experience home. Working with inthedark and Jonny Marsh just makes good sense.

Tell me about the Wild theme?

We wanted a theme that brings out a really hot, sexy and fun element, June long weekend is right smack bang in the middle of winter so the theme goes against that and will make sure we heat it right up! We want you to feel like going as wild as possible.

And the shows? We’ve heard it’ll be something pretty spectacular!

With shows produced and performed by Rhys Bobridge and his team of hot dancers and with the LEDs at Marquee we will have custom visuals from our London designer to give an edge to the shows and make it total visual stimulation.

Of course Jodie Harsh is flying in from London….

We have uber drag DJ Jodie Harsh direct from Room Service in London. She was most recently in Sydney for the Finale party during Mardi Gras and is totally hot property at the moment for her own brand of house music, fresh from officially remixing Justin Timberlake’s Suit & Tie.

And who else is Djing?

We’ve got local DJ talent: Chip, JimJam joing me on the decks, plus more DJs to be announced. Also the Swagger Crew will be taking over the Boom Box, bringing you the best in R&B, so we’ll have two rooms with completely different sounds.

Plus a very special guest PA from Krysten Cummings. How did that come about?

Krysten Cummings has done vocals on so many house tracks you would be bound to recognise if you’ve been clubbing anywhere in the past 5 years and is in Australia touring with Jesus Christ Superstar, so she knows how to work a crowd big time.

Is this one of the biggest events you’ve ever worked on promoting?

In this capacity, Most definitely!

Tell us a personal highlight of your years of Djing?

There’s been so many I’ve been blessed to have worked at some amazing parties and with so many great DJ’s… Some of the highlights would be last year at Mardi Gras in the forecourt, with Peyton singing, DJ’ing for Grace Jones on her Hurricane tour, DJ’ing at Harbour Parties over the  years, playing at We Love Space & Pacha in Ibiza, DJ’ing in January at Club Angel in Shanghai was another one that was so good. I’m sure I’ll be adding SuperStar WILD to this list too.

After 10 years of producing events, we have finally bought our first venue. Called The Gay Bar, situated at 231 Oxford Street.

She’s been through a lot, this Old Dame. One moment she gets a sparkly bright new rainbow painted all over her waist and the next … it’s gone. Just like that.

But now Oxford Street, the pulsating heart of Sydney’s gay and lesbian culture and undoubtedly the city’s favourite place to party has some new sparkle. A new place to meet and mingle. A new local and yet, a destination in its own right: a brand-spanking new Gay Bar!

And by Madonna, it’s about time.

Gay Bar is Oxford Street’s newest gay-owned and operated nightspot, curated and conceived by independent event producers In The Dark. With more than a decade of lavish parties and concerts under their belts, the team are no strangers to what makes Sydney punters tick and Gay Bar  is the culmination of years of dreams, ideas and lessons learnt on the road.“Gay Bar brings you all the unapologetic, sexy, camp and ‘Oh-my-god-I-love-this-song’ fun we all just can’t seem to get enough of,” says co-owner Stephen Craddock.

“We’re hoping to create a bright and shiny new disco ball destination for our favourite street now that its cherished rainbow has been wiped away.”</div>

No expense has been spared to create a space local denizens can feel right at home in, any night of the week. Street-level is homely and friendly with quiz nights, regular food and drink specials and music made for fun times. Upstairs, the club and cocktail bar floors play host to bubbly pop, sassy showtunes and hot n’ sexy house tracks, brought to you by weekly resident DJ Alex Taylor.

But unlike other gin palaces on the Strip, Gay Bar boasts a kitchen ready to bring new meaning to service, with everything from bar snacks to full meals on offer. Head chef Mark Proudfoot says he’s created a an all-day menu packed with old favourites with a modern day twist.

“Whether you’re dropping in for our soon-to-be-famous $1 hot dog or a more substantial feast, my challenge is to bring you the biggest flavours using the freshest seasonal produce,” the ex-Guillaume at Bennelong and Thomas Dux Food Ambassador says.

This extends to the bar and cocktail list where, among their everyday list of $5 drinks you’ll find the signature Gay Bar Schlong Island Iced Tea – yet another Gay Bar twist on the classic, Stephen says.

“We hope everyone will enjoy Gay Bar – I know we’ve had a lot of fun putting it together!” says co-owner Nelson De Sousa.

Because every good night starts at a Gay Bar … and sometimes the best nights end that way too.
